There are four elements in astrology: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. Each of the elements have a Yin (feminine) & Yang (masculine) energy, but like everything in this ancient practice, staying balanced is essential to both our physical and spiritual wellbeing. Being that there are 12 sings in the zodiac wheel, each element rules three signs; however, the way the element expresses itself depends on the zodiac sign. Earth and water are feminine, as they tend to be more nurturing and sensual. Fire and air are masculine, as they prefer to communicate, and take action.

 

The four elements carry a lot of importance when it comes to reading/studying a birth chart. For example, Does one element overpower the others? Are all four elements present? In order to better understand your Quality, first you must know what Element you are. (Which is explained above). Just like there are four elements that speak of general characteristics of signs that belong to them, there are three qualities (also called modalities) to the signs of the zodiac circle. There are four signs for each quality, each one from a separate quadrant of the zodiac. This characterization helps immensely when it comes to trying to understand ones character and interpreting a certain planet in someone's chart. 

 

Each of the three qualities has its speed and characteristic, and combines with only one sign from each element. This means that there are no two signs of the same element with the same quality. once you understand the nature of the element, it will be even easier to understand each specific sign through its combination with the quality. Opposite signs share the same quality, which helps them in their approach to mend differences and discover how to merge, or even to simply better understand each others beliefs and viewpoints, and contribute them into their own life.

The 3 Different Qualities:

 

Cardinal Signs: The four Cardinal Signs are Aries (first), Cancer (fourth) Libra (seventh) , Capricorn (tenth). Cardinal signs are known as the “initiators“ of the zodiac. That is because the Cardinal signs are much more fond of “starting” things rather than finishing them. They can easily forget about others when they are busy focusing on they’re own endeavors. They make changes when a situation no longer suits them.

 

Fixed Signs: The four fixed signs are Taurus (second), Leo (fifth), Scorpio (eighth) & Aquarius(eleventh). Fixed signs are very steady and reliable people. Fixed signs move patiently while trying to achieve they’re goals, always remembering who helped them out along the way. Fixed signs also are not easily influenced once they have they’re mind set on something. Very unwilling to change & most fixed signs are stuck in they’re ways. (Stagnant)

 

Mutable Signs: The four Mutable signs are Gemini (third), Virgo (sixth), Sagittarius (ninth), Pisces (twelfth). Mutable signs like to go with the flow. They are the most adaptable and flexible to changes in situations. Considered the chameleons of the zodiac, since they can blend in with different types of people. At times however, they’re desire to please everyone can get them into sticky situations. Sometimes they may come across as the wishy-washy type.
